A Revolution for the Local Newspaper Market?

August 16, 2007

A great article at Wired about a possible change of local newspapers in the US. Gannett newspaper division (in the United States, the company publishes 85 daily newspapers, including USA TODAY, and nearly 1,000 non-daily publications.) started to make your local newspaper to a local online platform and motivate you to write yourself. Great and simple user generated content idea! I am looking forward for the first projects here in Germany.
Citizens are desperate to broadcast their message to their communities, especially in small towns.

NY TIMES Online Gets For Free Again?

August 8, 2007

Well I think everybody has heard about it already: The New York Post reports that the NYTimes will end the subscription only TimesSelect service. So the NYTimes and it’s archive will be for free again soon!
I will appreciate that so much – as frequent user of the website…

The decision shows that it is hard even for high quality content to get benefit in the paid content market when you try to reach the mass market. Wsj.com is there more successful and it is more in a niche market.

The First Color E-Paper

May 15, 2007

Golem reports that  LG.Philips  developed the world’s first 14.1-inch flexible color E-paper display, equivalent in size to an A4 sheet of paper.
The E-paper uses electronic ink from E-Ink Corp. to produce a maximum of 4,096 colors. It can be viewed from a full 180 degrees, so that images always appear crisp, even when the display is bent.
These displays are extremely energy efficient, only using power when the image changes. Additionally the displays are extremely thin, less than 300 micrometers(㎛). The images displayed are comparable in quality to printed pages.

Wow! Even if it will take years to develop it for the mass market, that’s the next generation of mobile devices.

I’m looking forward to the moment, first time reading news in the train this way.
